Former NATO General Hans-Lothar Domröse expects a ceasefire in the war in Ukraine this year.
“Within 2023, we will have a truce,” he said in an interview with the Funke group.
according to the general, both Ukraine and Russia will begin new offenses in the coming month to try to achieve its military goals, but at the beginning of summer there will be a ceasefire, since both sides by that time will understand that further fighting is meaningless because they do not lead to the seizure of new territories.
“This will be the moment for negotiations on the ceasefire. There will only be the possibility of concluding an agreement that will suit both parties,” says Dosmres.
One of these compromises, the general considers the refusal of the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky from the immediate return to the control of Kyiv of Crimea and other territories occupied by Russia.
Dombraza believes that the parties can agree on the transition period, for example, for 50 years, as it was in the case of the return of Hong Kong to the control of China.
The expert of the German foreign policy in Russia and the security issues Andras Racs also predicts negotiations with the upcoming summer between Ukraine and Russia, which by the end of the year will lead to an agreement on the ceasefire. He explained the probability of such a prospect by the fact that in 2024 the presidential election was coming in Russia, and it is unlikely that Russia will wage an intensive war on the eve of and during these elections.
