Ex-Minister Of Defense Of Kazakhstan Ermekbaev Was Appointed New SCO Secretary General

The new General Secretary of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) for 2025-2027 will be the former Minister of Defense of Kazakhstan Nurlan Ermekbaev. This is reported by the agency Kazinform.

He will replace Zhang Mina in this post, which headed the organization from January 1, 2022.

Currently, Nurlan Ermekbaev is the deputy general of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization General, he was appointed to this position in 2023.

It is expected that he will replace Zhang Mina as January 1, 2025.

Nurlan Ermekbaev was born on January 1, 1963 in the South Kazakhstan region, in 1986 he graduated from the eastern faculty of the Military Red Banner Institute of the USSR Ministry of Defense with a degree in an officer with knowledge of Chinese and English.

During his career, Ermekbaev was a member of the USSR military mission in the People’s Republic of Angola. He also held various positions, including the adviser to the Embassy of Kazakhstan in China, Deputy Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Assistant President for International Affairs.

In addition, Ermekbaev acted as an assistant to the president and secretary of the Security Council, as well as the Minister of Defense of Kazakhstan.
