Ex-president of Kyrgyzstan will become UN Ambassador to Afghanistan. How will Taliban react?

Ex-President of Kyrgyzstan, Rosa Otunbaeva is appointed new special representative of the UN in Afghanistan, reports Radio Liberty.

72-year-old Otunbaeva will replace Canadka Deborah Lyons, which resigned in mid-June, the UN statement said. Otunbaeva takes office against the backdrop of a sharp restriction of women’s rights in Afghanistan, which occurred after the Taliban returned to power in August 2021. Otunbaeva is currently part of the UN advisory body to prevent conflicts.

Rosa Otunbaeva acted as president of Kyrgyzstan from 2010 to 2011, after President Kurmanbek Bakiev was overthrown as a result of the uprising. Otunbaeva several times held the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan.
