A court hearing was held in the criminal case of the head of the Narvings Rehabilitation Center of the New Life Office Aligidarov and other employees of the institution: Elvusala Huseynov, the name of Rzaev, Sarkhan Aliyev and Ganbara Gasanov. All of them are accused of torture and illegal imprisonment of patients.
As previously reported, one of the patients undergoing treatment in the rehabilitation center, Huseyn Mammadov was beaten by the center’s employees when trying to escape, then his hands were tied. The next day, the man’s condition worsened. Mamedov was taken to the hospital, but he could not save his life.
Although the materials of the criminal case states that the state of Huseyn Mammadov worsened as a result of the use of torture, there is a version that he died of an overdose of drugs.
Witnesses questioned in court gave conflicting testimonies: some argued that the torture in this institution was used, others denied this. Ambiguous opinions sounded regarding the effectiveness of the “12 steps” program, which was used to treat drug addicts in this center.
For example, Taleh Abdullaev, questioned as a witness, said that he was treated in New Life for several months and managed to recover from drug addiction.
“In your testimony at the investigation, you said that torture was applied to patients. And in court you deny it,” the prosecutor told the witness.
The witness explained that the binding of the hands was one of the rules of the program used and it was carried out with the aim of pacifying violent patients.
The next witness, questioned during the process, Urfan Agayev in his testimony stated that he had been a drug addict for many years, and that he met the defendants in one of the rehabilitation centers. According to him, the latter agreed after discharge to create their own medical institution for drug addicts.
“first created the center in Nibani, I joined them later. At that time they had already moved to Novikhani. He came to a volunteer, did not receive an official salary”.
. ”
The witness said that the father of the deceased Huseyn Mammadov called him to find out about the circumstances of the death of his son. Agayev replied that he was not on duty at that time.
The prosecutor asked Agayev how in the rehabilitation center they treated the fugitives. The witness said he did not face such situations.
The trial will continue on November 15th.
