Fidan: Türkiye Is Not Against Desire Of Ukraine To Join NATO, But We Must Be Realistic

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said that Ankara retains a pragmatic approach to the possible entry of Ukraine to NATO.

“We have nothing against the fact that Ukraine wants to join NATO, but we must be realistic. This is the official position voiced by our President Recep Tayyip Erdogan,” the minister emphasized in an interview with Bloomberg. >

Answering the question of whether Donald Trump can change the US approach to Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance, Fidan expressed doubt that even the previous US administration fully supported this process.

“I’m not sure that the previous US authorities were indeed supporters of Ukraine’s entry into NATO. Therefore, I do not think that a new policy has appeared in this matter now,” he said.

The minister also emphasized that Türkiye is discussing this issue with European partners and Kyiv.

“It is important to understand that Ukraine strives for this not only for the sake of formal membership, but also to guarantee its own security,” he added.
