First elections to upper chamber of Turkmenistan parliament

The first elections to the upper chamber of the Turkmenistan parliament (Hulk Maslakhati Millie Gengesh) will be held on Sunday.

As the TASS reports, the CEC country has announced on Friday to the completion of the campaign and readiness for voting.

The People’s Council of the Turkmenistan Parliament consists of 56 members, of which 48 are elected from each of the five velayats (regions) and the city of Ashgabat by secret voting at meetings of local folk councilov, eight more members are appointed by the President.

112 people are registered by candidates for 48 mandates, 29 of them – women.

Early People’s Council was the highest representative body, where the president, deputies of parliament, people’s representatives, government members, heads of regions, etrapov (districts) and cities, judicial heads and others. The People’s Council could, in particular, to form the CEC and appoint elections and referendums, to solve questions about the change in the state border and administrative-territorial division of the country.

In September 2019, President of the Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov initiated the transition to the two-bearet system of parliament and the association of Hulk Maslakhati (representative body) and Majlis (Legislative) into a single system of representative and legislative bodies. Majlis will now play the role of the Lower Chamber, and Hulk Maslahaty – the upper chamber of parliament.
