The Pope’s trip to Iraq is expected to last three days. Today he arrived in Baghdad, where he will meet with the spiritual leader of the Shiites of Iraq, Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani and pray for the victims of war and terrorism.

In the future, the pontiff will go to Mosul – the former “citadel” of the “Islamic State” militants. In addition, he will visit Ur – the birthplace of the prophet Abraham. Francis will also visit Iraqi Kurdistan and the Christian center of Karakosh, hold a mass in Erbil.

Iraq has deployed thousands of additional security personnel to protect the 84-year-old pontiff.
