Turkey retains a firm commitment to the implementation of the provisions of the 1936 Montreo Convention, which regulates the passage of ships through Turkish straits.
This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey Hakan Fidan at a joint press conference with Bulgarian colleague Maria Gabriel in Sofia.
“Turkey will continue to strictly comply with the Montreo Convention. This issue is not even subject to discussion,” said the head of the department.
According to him, maintaining stability in the Black Sea and the prevention of actions that can be at risk, are among the fundamental priorities of Turkey as the country-performer of the Montreo Convention.
Fidan expressed satisfaction about the signing by Turkey, Romania and Bulgaria the Memorandum on the creation of an anti-minor naval group in the Black Sea (MCM Black Sea). The diplomat called this event an example of cooperation in the field of regional security.
The diplomat emphasized that Turkey considers this initiative “not only as a demonstration of commitment to the principle of regional responsibility, but also as a step corresponding to the spirit of allies.”
