Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry called on international organizations to mobilize efforts to close the Metal NPP. This is stated in a statement by the Azerbaijan Foreign Ministry in connection with April 26 – International Day of Memory about the Chernobyl catastrophe, from the day, 35 years old, reports haqqin.az.
Threats associated with Metsamor NPP in Armenia must be comprehensively reviewed by the international community, the statement says.
It is also noted that this NPP was built in 1976-1980 for the same technology as the nuclear power plant in Chernobyl, and is located in the seismic zone.
Outdated technology and location make the Metsamor NPP of one of the most dangerous nuclear power plants in the world, emphasized in the statement.
“Despite the fact that various international organizations call this object a threat to the entire region, Armenia still exploits the Metsamor NPP despite the fact that its operating time has expired. In 2020, the EU again called on Armenia to close the NPP, noting that” This nuclear power plant cannot be upgraded to the level to fully respond to international nuclear safety standards, so it is necessary to immediately close it and safely derived from exploitation. “Outdated technology and non-compliance with the rules of security during the operation of the Metsamor NPP create serious environmental problems for the region,” The statement says.
Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry calls on all relevant international organizations, civil society and environmental issues, as well as countries in the region to mobilize efforts to close the Metal NPP.
