In Lithuania, they express the hope that Washington will remain the main partner of the country in the field of security, regardless of the results of the presidential election.
This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielus Landsbergis, commenting on the US presidential election.
“We have no large choice – to diversify partners or make preferences. The United States will and will remain the main strategic partner of Lithuania in security and defense matters,” the LRT quoted the Minister.
Lithuania will have enough arguments to convince the new US administration to maintain the security of the region, expressed the confidence of Landsbergis. “We have serious arguments on the issues of financing defense, procurement from the United States, strategies in the Indo -Pacific region and other important topics,” the minister said.
Particular attention, according to him, should be paid to the further support of Ukraine. “The question is how to keep the focus of the United States in Ukraine. Now the Western countries as a whole pay less attention to this issue, and the feeling of“ betrayal of Kyiv, ”Landsbergis emphasized, adding that if assistance to Ukraine is reduced, this foreboding can become a reality.
In his opinion, the strategy of both parties against Ukraine is not completely clear. “You need to be prepared with arguments, as well as to adverse scenarios,” said the head of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry.
Speaker of the Sejm Victoria Chmilita-Nilesen assured that regardless of the results of the elections, Lithuania would continue to actively promote parliamentary diplomacy. “We worked effectively in this direction, organized visits at the highest level, and intend to continue,” she emphasized, noting that the United States remains a key ally in defense and other areas.
Nilesen’s Chmilita also expressed the hope that Trump’s election rhetoric in NATO and Ukraine will change after the election. “Rhetoric is often one during the campaign and the other after the elections, so there are questions, but in any case, with any choice of the American people, we will work,” she said.
