The continuation of sanctions pressure on Damascus has lost all meaning. This was stated by the special representative of the Russian President for the Middle East and the countries of Africa, the deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mikhail Bogdanov, answering the media question about unilateral sanctions acting in relation to Syria.
“Our position on the issue of unilateral sanctions is well known. It has a fundamental and consistent character. We have always opposed and continue to oppose the use of this illegal mechanism, which is an instrument of undisguised pressure on the” objectionable “of the government of sovereign states and is actually used for the Western countries collective punishment of their peoples, ”said Bogdanov.
According to the diplomat, economic restrictions introduced against Syria have no international legal basis, since they were not approved by the corresponding decision of the UN Security Council, as required by the charter of this universal organization.
Unfortunately, guided by its geopolitical ambitions, the US governments, the countries of the European Union, Great Britain and a number of their allies have introduced numerous “suffocating” sanctions against Syria, which largely provoked a destructive socio-economic crisis in this country and now seriously impede its full Restoration, ”he issued.
At the same time, Bogdanov pointed out that Moscow is considering as a “step in the right direction”, decisions of a number of countries to mitigate some of the previously introduced anti -Syrian restrictive measures that have been taken recently.
“We believe that even if we assess the situation in Syria through the prism of the perverted logic of the Western states, after the radical changes and the change of Bashar Assad’s regime, the continuation of sanctioned pressure to Damascus lost its meaning,” said the deputy head of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
