The former head of Libya Muammar Gaddafi could finance the anti-Natov campaign in Spain on the eve of the referendum about finding the Kingdom in the Alliance in 1986, the ABC newspaper reports with reference to the personal archival documents of the Spanish Intelligence Director from 1981 to 1995.
According to the publication, the Government of the Kingdom was forced to hold a referendum on NATO membership. Residents of the country were supposed to approve the proposal of the authorities that Spain remains as part of the Alliance, to which she joined in 1982. However, three days after the announcement of the referendum, Spain’s defense minister called Manglano and assured that the country’s leadership wants to investigate “sources of financing an antinatov campaign.”
“After the post of Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez was informed by the police about the colonel of the army,” who visited Paris and Libya, “who met with Colonel Gaddafi, from which I received 400 million [PESET] to the NATO financing campaign,” writes newspaper.
“Two days before the referendum, the result was difficult to predict. Ultimately, 59.55% of the Spaniards voted for the preservation of NATO membership” – reports the publication.
