Deputy Bashkan (heads) of autonomous territorial education Gagauzia (ATO Gagauzia) as part of Moldova, Ilya Uzun, said that the region will turn to the UN Security Council (UN Security Council) to protect its rights.
In his statement on social networks, Uzun said that the Constitutional Court of Moldova decided to cancel Gagauzia’s right to appoint his prosecutor.
Having emphasized that this decision is “illegal” and “political”, Uzun said that steps would be taken to protect the rights of the region, and noted:
“We will give an answer to this. Our grades and legal arguments on this issue will send to the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe, the UN Security Council and other international organizations. We will require external control and intervention to protect the rights of the region and restore the rule of law”.
background
The Constitutional Court of Moldova decided to cancel the Rights of the ATO Gagauzia to independently appoint his prosecutor.
The Chairman of the Constitutional Court Domnik Manole, after the decision, said that Gagauzia is part of Moldova: “The region has the right to make decisions at the local level in the political, economic and cultural spheres. On the other hand, the prosecutor’s office is a unitary system with national status. The Gagauz region is also part of this system.”
The Bashkan Gagauzia, who was under house arrest, Evgeny Gutsul reacted to the court decision, saying: “This decision is a step towards the destruction of the Gagauz autonomy.”
Earlier, a candidate for the post of prosecutor of the region was determined by the local parliament, the so -called “People’s Assembly”, and approved by the Prosecutor General of Moldova. According to the decision, the Prosecutor General of Moldova will be able to independently determine and appoint the prosecutor of the Gagauz region.
