Germany is investigating Russia’s war crimes in Ukraine

Germany’s police said on Saturday that the country’s law enforcement agencies have begun investigating several hundred potential war crimes in Ukraine, of the commission and involvement of which not only Russian troops, but also politicians and military leaders are suspected, Agency France-Presse reports.

“At the moment, we have received a three -digit number of signals,” said Holger Munh, head of the Federal Police,

in an interview with the newspaper Welt Am Sonntag.

According to him, the investigation concerns not only persons suspected of committing war crimes, but also political and military leaders. “This is the most difficult part of our investigation is a confusing puzzle,” Munh noted, adding that in this case “our unambiguous goal is to call the perpetrators of the atrocities, to prove their actions with the help of our investigation and hold them accountable,” including In Germany.

In investigations, the police helps, in particular, the German foreign intelligence service, which, for example, recorded radio converters of Russian soldiers. German investigators can also be sent to Ukraine, Munh said, however, for this they will need an international mandate.

Last Wednesday, June 15, the UN Commission in Ukraine confirmed that it received numerous statements about offenses by Russian troops, but stated that it was too early to talk about whether their actions were military crimes.
