Government And Main Opposition Parties In Germany Agreed To Date Of Early Elections

Representatives of the German Social Democratic Party (SDPG), the Green and the largest opposition Alliance of the CDU/CSS (Christian Democratic Union of Germany and the Christian-Social Union in Bavaria) to make the early elections on February 23, 2025.

According to the German media, parliamentary factions from the SDPG, Green and CDU/CSS agreed on the date of early elections. According to the agreement reached, early elections are scheduled for February 23, 2025. However, the final decision on this issue will be made by Germany President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

In order to appoint early elections in the country, the German Chancellor Olaf Sholts must first request a vote of confidence from the Federal Assembly. If the German chancellor cannot get a vote of trust, the president must dissolve the parliament within 21 days and hold the elections within 60 days.

The political crisis in Germany began on November 6, after Scholz decided to dismiss the Minister of Finance Christian Lindner, who was also the chairman of the free Democratic Party (SVDP), which was part of the ruling “traffic light coalition”. After the meeting, the SVDP brought its ministers from the government and announced the decay of the ruling coalition.
