Greece’s coastal guard showed serious negligence during the ship’s disaster with migrants off the coast of Pelopones in June 2023. This conclusion was reached in the office of the Ombudsman of Greece, having conducted its own independent investigation, as a result of which a report of 5 thousand pages was prepared.
As a result of the crash of a fishing vessel, transporting about 750 migrants, hundreds of people died. 104 people were saved, another 82 people were killed, the rest are considered missing.
The written report of the Ombudsman says that the institution decided to conduct its own independent investigation in November 2023. As a result of the investigation, a report was prepared where the incident and negligence of the coast guard were analyzed in detail.
“Ombudsman completed the investigation of the disaster, during which a number of serious violations were identified by senior Greek coastal guards during search and rescue operations,” the statement will be said.
According to the report, the actions and inaction of responsible persons may fall under criminal liability for the creation of a deadly threat, as well as for the expulsion, health and physical integrity of people with serious risk.
