Greenhouse – First British Theater Without Waste

The first Greenhouse Theater in the UK without waste aims to increase people’s awareness about the problem of climate change through art.

Theater, built in the British capital completely from recycled materials, represents its audience an approach to art from both the creative and environmental angle.

The roof of the theater is designed from materials that pass sunlight so that it is maximally used and minimize electricity consumption. The floor of the theater is covered with grass. The scenery and costumes used on the stage are purchased from the “second hands”. Items that are still suitable for use are transmitted to the communities in need. The theater puts performances mainly in the summer months. In particular, this summer spectators will be able to see 16 productions.

The founder and artistic director of Greenhouse Ollie Savage told “Anadol” about the history of the creation of the theater and his creative initiatives.

“Art does not give us an idea of how the temperature changes, it does not tell us about the precipitation in the tropical forests, does not give an idea of how the climate change occurs. However, art can help us understand our attitude to climate change”, -Savage said.

According to Khudruk, the idea of creating a theater arose in 2017, when he read a script written by a close friend.

“The story tells about violence against the planet. It was a very interesting work. People were shocked when there was violence against another person or animal, but no one reacted adequately when it concerned the planet itself,” said Khudoruk.

According to Savija, he is very happy and proud of the fact that he leads such a theater structure.
