Guatemala: voting in general election takes place

In Guatemala on Sunday, June 25, voting in a general election.

The country’s population is almost 9.3 million people. More than 8 million people will be able to vote in the elections.

Guatemalians will have to elect the President, Vice President, 160 deputies to Congress (one-Palace legislative body), 20 deputies to the Central American Parliament and the heads of municipalities.

Power stations will work from 07:00 to 18:00 local time, the Higher Electoral Tribunal (Tribunal Supremo Electoral, TSE) reported – the highest authority in the elections that is engaged in the organization of the electoral process.

If none of the presidential candidates will gain 50 percent of the vote in the first round of elections, on August 20 the second round of elections will be held.

The president’s post is claimed by Suri Rios-daughter and active supporter of former President Guatemala Efrain Rios Montt, wife of former president Alvaro Kolom Kabalros, leader of the National Union of Hope (UNE) Sandra Torres and former organizer of the United Nations Edmond Mule.

The results of questionnaire polls indicate that no candidate will gain more than 50 percent of the vote in the first round.

The election is watched by the delegation of the European Union. Safety is provided by 42, 3 thousand law enforcement officers.
