The European Union is ready to contribute to the restoration of Syria using a “step -by -step” approach. This was stated by the Chairman of the European Commission Ursula von der Lyain, speaking at the General Assembly of the European Parliament (EP).
“The fall of Bashar al -Assad is a liberation for the Syrian people. We all saw heartbreaking shots from Assad’s prisons. It was kept here, tortured and many innocent people died. Innocent, like a young girl who spent 14 years in prison due She shared on social networks, or children born in prisons who have never seen daylight … Assad created a system of underground dungeons. – said the head of the European Commission.
She noted that a number of the first steps taken by the new leadership are encouraging. According to Ursula von der Lyain, such issues as the creation of the inclusive government, the protection of minorities and the continuation of the fight against the Deaash terrorist organization will be important in the upcoming period. “A reliable and inclusive transition meets the fundamental interests of Europe,” the European politician emphasized.
According to the head of the European Commission, Europe should be involved in this process both at the regional and local levels.
“I just returned from Jordan and Turkey. I discussed how we can work together with the aim of stabilizing the region,” she said.
von der Layen also drew attention to an increase in humanitarian assistance. “That is why we created a new humanitarian aircraft through Turkey and Jordan. This year we increased our humanitarian aid to more than 160 million euros,” she recalled.
The head of the European Commission assured that Brussels will continue to support, “but with a new accent for the speedy restoration and reconstruction.”
“We are talking about power supply, water, basic infrastructure and much more. However, this will require a step -by -step approach. The new leadership in Damascus should prove that its actions correspond to the words. In this context, we must also revise our sectoral sanctions to facilitate Restructuring, ”she said.
The European politician also attracted attention to the problem of the return of the Syrian refugees to the country, noting that the conditions for this have not yet been ripe.
“Europe is ready to support the Syrians who decided to return home at every stage of this path. Syria belongs to all its people, including those who fled from Assad’s cruelty, all the Syrians have the right to take the country’s future,” the head of the European Commission concluded .
