How old phones pollute planet

In 2022, about 5.3 billion phones will go to a landfill in the world, participants in the International Forum of Electronics and Electric Species forum. However, they can be used for processing and further production of equipment, writes BBC.

“Electronic waste” is a huge problem for the environment. They almost do not decompose and retain metals and batteries. And this means that valuable metals, for example, cobalt and copper, need to be mined again for new devices. Today, only a little more than 17% of electronic waste is correctly processed.

“most people simply do not think that each of these small (seemingly) objects has a decent value already in itself. And all together – at a global level – these are also huge volumes,” explains the general director of Weee Pascal Leroya.

In the UK, to solve the problem of the discarded technique, the Professional Association of Chemists has announced a national campaign to collect electronic waste necessary for the production of new gadgets. Experts explained this initiative by the fact that the war in Ukraine (like other international conflicts) can significantly violate the supply chains of valuable metals.

“These devices are the most important source of raw materials, which, after processing, can be reused for the production of new gadgets or heavy electrical equipment – for example, windbreaks, batteries for electric vehicles or solar panels. In other words, all that we need so sooner for the speedy Refusing fossil fuel and transition to green energy with a minimum emission of greenhouse gases, ”says Magdalena Charitanovich, head of the weee communications department.

Researchers are sure that people should not save old equipment at home, and even more so not to throw it away. They must submit it for processing at special reception points, so that the specialists recycle the “dead” devices.

“Boxes for collecting in supermarkets, collecting old or broken devices when delivering new ones, collecting small electronic devices in post offices – these are just some steps that help to motivate people to take old electrical appliances,” said the head of Weee Pascal Leroy.
