How Turkey can delay adoption of Sweden and Finland in NATO

In its parliament, Turkey may delay the ratification of the decision on the adoption of Finland and Sweden in NATO until June 2023. It is reported by Iltalehti with reference to sources at the NATO headquarters in Brussels.

Stockholm and Helsinki continue to negotiate with Ankara. However, experts believe that Recep Tayyip Erdogan is inclined to delay the process, and conducting these negotiations is now not an important and fundamental issue for him.

In NATO, two scenarios are considered. In the first case, Turkey may approve these applications of these either before Christmas (December 25), or leave the issue until June 2023, making a decision after the alliance summit.

In the second case, the decision may be made after the presidential election in the country that will take place in June 2023. In addition, a new agreement with Moscow on the construction of a gas hub may affect the decision of Ankara. The implementation of this project can also delay the decision.
