Hungary expects this year to begin imports of gas from Azerbaijan

Hungary expects by the end of 2023 to begin imports of Azerbaijani gas and further receive 1-2 billion cubic meters per year.

This was announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations of Hungary Peter Siyyarto, speaking at a press conference in Budapest after a meeting with the Minister of Labor and Social Protection of Azerbaijan Sakhil Babaev. They held a meeting of the bilateral cooperation commission.

“By the end of the year, we expect to get about 100 million cubic meters of Azerbaijani natural gas,” said the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry.

He recalled that earlier between Budapest and Baku an agreement was reached on the supply of 1-2 billion cubic meters of gas per year under a long-term contract.

At the same time, Siyyarto noted that this will need to increase the throughput of gas pipelines in the region, and Hungary counts on financial assistance from the European Union.

“If the European Union is seriously related to the issue of diversification of natural gas supply and the use of new sources, then it must provide resources for infrastructure development in southeastern Europe,” the minister said.
