Antarctica broke off a giant iceberg the size of an island in the UK.
This was reported by employees of the Halls Research Station – the British Polar Station on the Shelf Glacier Brant (BAS) at the Wedell Sea in Antarctica.
Iceberg Square is 380 square kilometers, which is equivalent to the area of the island of White in the south of England.
According to scientists, the first cracks in the broken glacier appeared in 2016.
A specialist in the study of glaciers Oliver Marsh said that the station staff received warnings through the global positioning system (GPS), which was placed on the iceberg.
“Within an hour, we recorded a shift of several hundred meters. This was the biggest sign that the iceberg separated from the continent,” he said.
In satellite images widespread BAS, it is clear that the iceberg is surrounded by water and separated from the continent.
Halls Research Station, established in 2017, announced concern about the movements on the glaciers observed in recent years.
Over the past three years, huge icebergs the size of cities such as Paris and London,
