IEA: Investments in solar energy may exceed investments in oil and gas

The volume of investment in solar energy may exceed the total amount of investments in the oil and gas sector until 2030. This was announced by the head of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Fatikh Birol.

In particular, the head of the IEA called the “dizzying” speed of transformations in the field of environmentally friendly energy last year.

According to him, an unprecedented breakthrough in technology was committed, including renewable energy and electric car sources. “There are two main reasons for such a leap. Firstly, costs have significantly decreased, and technologies of environmentally friendly energy have become able to compete with technical solutions on fossil fuel. Secondly, at the moment, countries consider environmentally friendly energy as a solution to energy security,”- said Birol.

According to him, instead of oil and gas dependence on other countries, they prefer clean technologies, including renewable and atomic energy, electric cars. “I believe that these technologies will grow much faster, since the costs and incentives will decrease,” said the head of the MAA.

Birol emphasized that the volume of investments in the technology of environmentally friendly energy this year will exceed 1.7 trillion dollars, and investments in solar energy in the world will exceed investment in oil production. “The potential of solar energy growth has practically no boundaries. The demand for electricity is growing rapidly, especially in developing countries. The question is how to satisfy this demand. And the Sun is the main candidate. As for the new power plants that will be built in 95 percent of the world of the countries of the world , solar energy is the cheapest source of energy. And in this regard, I believe that until the 2030s the sun will become a very important competitor in the field of investment not only for oil, but also of natural gas, ”he said.

At the same time, the head of the IEA attracted attention to the difficulties associated with the connection of solar and wind energy to the networks. “There is not enough investment here. I compare this with the creation of the most modern machine against the background of forgetfulness in the issue of road construction. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the network so that we can use its potential for renewable energy,” Birol added.
