“We once again emphasize concern about the continued” vaccine nationalism. “This, in particular, said by the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, speaking at the 76th session of the UN General Assembly in the video format.
“Azerbaijan has repeatedly expressed discontent due to the fact that rich countries acquire vaccines in an amount exceeding their needs. We once again underline concern about the continuing” vaccine nationalism “and in-depth inequality between developed and developing states in accessing Vaccines. Such actions impede the protection of their population by developing countries. According to international reports, today more than 75 percent of the world’s doses of vaccines have been acquired by 10 rich countries, in countries with low income, vaccination is less than 2 percent.
In order to attract international attention to this issue, Azerbaijan on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement put forward a resolution to ensure equal and universal access of all countries to vaccines in the UN Human Rights Council, and this resolution was unanimously adopted in March of the current year.
As part of the current session, Azerbaijan plans to nominate the draft resolution on the same topic at the UN General Assembly.
We believe that there is a need for strong, coordinated and targeted global steps for better recovery after COVID-19. In this regard, we propose to create a high-level panel on global recovery after COVID-19, which will prepare recommendations on global measures in the postpandemic period, “said the head of state.
