Hangkendi was taken under control during the anti -terrorist operation conducted by the Azerbaijani army on September 19, 2023. On October 15, 2023, the city was visited by President Ilham Aliyev and raised a tricolor flag Republic. Today, the Azerbaijani flag is fluttering everywhere in Hangkendi.

As in all territories liberated from the occupation, the Baku administration deployed large-scale repair and construction work in Hankendi. Hotels, entertainment centers and public buildings are built in the city.

There are no permanent residents in the city, only workers and civil servants live in Hankendi who perform restoration work. Khankendi work cafes, restaurants, parks and social services are open. The city creates all the conditions necessary for the population.

– Hankendi will become a student city

Azerbaijani government is working to turn Hankendi into a student city. By decree of President Ilham Aliyev, the University of Karabakh was created in the city.

In the new academic year, the University of Karabakh, on the territory of which construction and repair work is currently underway, will accept the first students.

Founded by the Karabakh khan in the XVIII century, the city was called Hankendi, which means the “Khan village”. The Armenians were settled in the city during Tsarist Russia, before that only Azerbaijanis lived in Hankendi. During the Soviet Union, the city in honor of the Armenian Bolshevik leader Stepan Shaumyan, known for its massacres of Azerbaijanis, was renamed Stepanakert. In 1991, the government of Azerbaijan returned its real name to the city – “Hankendi”.
