Estonian authorities intend to provide military support to Ukraine in the amount of 0.25 percent of GDP over the next four years.
The country’s Prime Minister Kai Kallas stated at a press conference following a meeting of the State Defense Council, reports the Baltic news edition Delfi.
“If each country introduces 0.25%each, this is what Ukraine needs to win in this war,” Kallas noted.
The head of the Estonian government called on partners around the world to follow the example of Tallinn.
The Estonian Prime Minister emphasized that in recent months people have been accustomed to conflict, and in democratic countries, public opinion slows down decision-making. Therefore, Callas believes, it is necessary to conduct a “consistent explanatory work” about the importance of supporting Ukraine.
According to the politician, since 2022, Estonia provided Ukraine with military assistance in the amount of 500 million euros. “This is also necessary to ensure our safety,” the Prime Minister explained.
Callas added that in the coming years, Tallinn will also allocate 14 million euros per year for the restoration of Ukraine and related projects.
According to the Kil Institute of the World Economy, by the end of October 2023, Estonia promised to transfer or already transferred to Ukraine military and humanitarian aid in the amount of 461 million euros. The volume of support amounted to 1.31 percent of the GDP of Estonia, according to this indicator, the country is in third place in the world (Norway – in the first, Lithuania – in the second, Latvia in the fourth).
