International online encyclopedia Wikipedia (“Wikipedia”) was blocked in Pakistan after the service did not fulfill the requirement of the authorities to remove “blasphemous” content, the Bloomberg agency reports with reference to the representative of the country’s telecommunications department Malahat Oblaid.
According to her, the authorities are still negotiating with the online encyclopedia and consider the possibility of unlocking the platform if the necessary content is completely deleted. For the removal of immoral content, the country’s leadership gave “Wikipedia” 48 hours.
The representative of the online encyclopedia did not respond to Bloomberg’s request. The agency recalled that Pakistan’s legislation allows the death penalty for everyone who insults Islam.
In past years, Pakistan also blocked large media resources due to immoral content. So, in 2013, the country was forbidden to use the Youutube video hosting for three years, and in 2020 and in 2021 the ban touched the social network of short Tiktok videos.
