Institute for Study of War about Changes in leadership of Russian army

In the Russian military leadership, serious changes have occurred due to the failures of the Russian Army in Ukraine, the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) says.

According to the report, the British Ministry of Defense confirmed the preliminary data of ISW that at least six Russian commanders were probably dismissed from their posts from the beginning of the Russian Federation’s invasion of Ukraine. Among them are the commander of the Eastern Military District, Colonel General Alexander Tchaiko, as well as the commander of the Western Military District, Colonel General Alexander Zhuravlev.

The British Ministry of Defense added that General Alexander Dvornikov, who commanded the Russian army in Ukraine since April, was suspended, and Army General Sergei Surovikin took on the “southern group” of the troops “in Ukraine.

The report said that “the British Ministry of Defense came to the conclusion that the lack of consistency in the Russian team structure and the ongoing losses of military leadership on the battlefield make it difficult to command and management, as well as the overall efficiency of operations in Ukraine.”
