The Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Ali Khamenei approved a proposal that included an amnesty or mitigation of sentences for 2,887 prisoners on the occasion of the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad.
According to Khamenei’s office, the decision was made in accordance with the proposal of the head of the judicial authority of the Islamic Republic of Gulamkhuseyn Muhsini Edgei.
The decision applies to convicted by revolutionary courts, state penitentiary institutions and judicial institutions of the Armed Forces.
So, 1291 The prisoner fell under an amnesty, 1596 convicts softened the sentences, another 59 – death sentence was replaced by imprisonment.
According to Article 110 of the Iran Constitution, the Iranian leader has the right to have mercy on prisoners. At the request of the Iranian judiciary, Khamenei annually declares an amnesty to some prisoners, especially this happens on the anniversary of the revolution, holidays and other religious days.
