Ireland President fell into a political scandal because of his wife’s words

The President of Ireland Michael Higgins was criticized after his wife Sabina Higgins wrote a letter to The Irish Times, where she spoke about the cessation of the war in Ukraine. According to the British edition of The Independent, the Irish leader was asked to clarify the position of his wife.

So, Sabina Higgins wrote that the war in Ukraine will continue until the world convinces the presidents of the Russian Federation and Ukraine Vladimir Putin and Vladimir Zelensky “to agree to the ceasefire and negotiations.”

The words of the wife of the Irish president caused a wave of criticism from the Irish parliamentarians who turned to Higgins demanding to clearly indicate their position in Ukraine. In particular, the deputy from the Irish Party of Fianna Fail, Malcolm Bern, noted that it is unacceptable to publish such letters in official sources, and the president himself must clearly declare his support for the Ukrainian people. In more sharp expressions, the Senator from the Fine Gael party John McGahon spoke out. He stated that the letter of Sabina Higgins was inappropriate, useless and disgusting, and her views did not coincide with the views of the Irish people.

At the same time, among European politicians there were those who supported Sabina Higgins. Thus, the deputy of the European Parliament from Ireland Claire Daily told The Irish Times that the position to resolve the conflict in Ukraine with a diplomatic way has the right to exist.
