Italian government on verge of collapse

The coalition government of the Italian Prime Minister Mario Draga is close to collapse after the statement of the Party of Five Stars (5-Star Movement) about the boycott of the key voting on the financial assistance package on July 14, writes The Guardian.

The former Prime Minister of Italy and the current head of the Party of the Movement of 5 Stars, Giuseppe Conte, said that his party cannot support the bill to allocate funds to needing families and companies. “We are ready to support the government, but not to sign an empty bill. The one who accuses us of irresponsibility must look at his own courtyard,” said Contain to reporters.

Parliamentacles should also vote for increasing support, including military assistance, to Ukraine. The movement has long declared their disagreement with the sending of weapons to the Ukrainian military.

The refusal to participate in the vote can lead to a serious political crisis and even the breakdown of the government. It is also possible to hold early elections. In addition, the League right party, which is also included in the coalition, is likely to not support the current Prime Minister if the party of Giuseppe Comte leaves.

Earlier, Mario Drago said that the Italian government will not be able to work if the “movement of 5 stars” leaves the coalition. A few days ago, Contain handed the Prime Minister a list of requirements for the further stay of the party in the coalition.

“The movement of the five stars” was the largest political force in parliament after the party gained 33% of the vote in the national elections of 2018. However, since that time the support of the party has decreased significantly. Recent public opinion polls indicate the support of voters of only 13%.
