The authorities of Japan five years later returned the term “illegal occupation” in relation to the southern part of the Kuril Islands.
Russian media write that the corresponding wording is contained in the text of the final statement of the participants of the annual “nationwide rally for the return of the northern territories”, held with the participation of Prime Minister Fumio Kisida.
“It is unacceptable that the four northern islands (the southern part of the Kuril Islands – approx. Ed.) Were illegally occupied by the Soviet Union 77 years ago and remain such today,” the document says.
