The South Caucasus is important for Romania and the European Union, said Romania President Klaus Johannis in a press statement after negotiations with Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev in an extended composition.
“Azerbaijan is the first country in the region of the South Caucasus, cooperation with which Romania has taken to the level of strategic partnership, this happened in 2009. Along with this, our country is the first member of the European Union to signing a strategic partnership document”, – noted the President of Romania.
Klaus Johannis said that “tomorrow state oil companies of the two countries – Romgaz and Socar – will sign a new agreement. According to this agreement in 2023-2024, additional gas will be transported to our country. Both of the project supported by the European Commission – and the Southern Gas Corridor and the underwater cable, which will be laid for the transportation of electricity produced in Azerbaijan from renewable energy sources, will make a tangible contribution to ensuring energy safety in the European Union. “
President of Romania noted that for 30 years Romania and Azerbaijan have been associated with excellent diplomatic and political relations. He recalled the visit of President Ilham Aliyev in 2022 in Bucharest. During this visit, an agreement was signed on strategic partnership in the development and transfer of green energy between the governments of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania and Hungary.
Johannis emphasized that Romania is ready to implement regional projects of important strategic importance, cooperation in the areas of energy, trade, investment, digitalization and agriculture.
