In Kazakhstan, July 6 celebrates the state holiday – the day of the capital.
The date of July 6 was not chosen by chance, it was on this day in 1994 that the Supreme Council of Kazakhstan approved the decision to transfer the capital from Almaty to Akmola. On May 6, 1998, the first president of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev signed a decree on renaming Akmola in Astana.
On June 10, 1998, an official presentation of the new capital took place. And from the moment the city of metropolitan status acquiring the day of the capital was celebrated on June 10. In 2006, Astana Day was moved to July 6th.
In 2008, the holiday received state status, since then July 6 for the whole country is considered a weekend. In 2019, the capital of Kazakhstan was again renamed – to Nur -Sultan. And four years later, in 2022, the city returned the former name – Astana.
