Kazakhstan President Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev signed the Law “On Amendments and Additions to Certain Legislative Acts of the Republic of Kazakhstan on counteracting the illegal circulation of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances, their analogues, precursors and potent substances”.
According to the press service of the Kazakh leader, the law is aimed at fulfilling the instructions of the head of state given at a meeting of the National Kurultay on March 15, 2024 regarding the tightness of responsibility for the production and organization of drug sales, as well as the appliance of the milder criminal measures to their layors .
The law has been tightened by criminal liability for drug production, as well as for the manufacture, processing and production of drugs by officials. Now, for these crimes, the guilty persons may be prescribed imprisonment for a term of 15 to 20 years or lifelong imprisonment with confiscation of property.
Along with this, the law is slightly softened by punishments for drugs of drugs. For the commission of such a crime for the first time without aggravating circumstances, the law provided for imprisonment for a term of 5 to 8 years with confiscation of property (earlier from 5 to 10 years with confiscation of property).
At the same time, the law has retained quite stringent sanctions for persons distributing drugs in the criminal group, in education organizations, and minors, providing for a punishment of imprisonment for a period of 15 to 20 years with confiscation of property.
The law also tightened the criminal liability of officials for the distribution of drugs. If earlier for these crimes they were faced with imprisonment for a period of 10 to 15 years with confiscation of property, now they provide for imprisonment for a term of 15 to 20 years with confiscation of property.
In addition, the law has taken other measures to increase the effectiveness of counteracting the illegal trafficking of drugs and potent substances.
