Kissinger: They misunderstood me. I did not say that territory should be given

Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger explained that his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos was incorrectly understood by the public and he did not call for the transfer of Ukrainian lands of Russia. In his opinion, only Donbass and Crimea can be the subject of territorial disputes between countries, since they go beyond the scope of the current crisis.

“I never (calls to transfer territories – ed.) I said that the best dividing line for the ceasefire is the pre -war status quo, that is, you should not wage war on the territories that were Ukrainian when war It began, in the territory that at that time were listed as part of Russia or perceived as part of it. And I warned against the transformation of the war for the freedom of Ukraine into a war for the future of Russia. We need to think about this very carefully. Now Russia will still occupy 15% of pre-war territories of Ukraine – it should be unconditionally returned to Ukraine, ”Kissinger said in an interview with Time.

According to a diplomat, the aggravation of territorial disputes can lead to uncontrollable consequences. “I did not say that the territory should be given. I just had in mind that it should have a separate status in any negotiations. I am unconditionally for the freedom of Ukraine and its significant role in Europe,” summed up Henry Kissinger.

Earlier, during a speech in Davos, the US-Miner said that Ukraine and its allies should stop attempts to “inflict a crushing defeat” to the Russian troops and proposed to begin negotiations. Ideally, he noted, countries should return to the pre-war status-quo. The proposal of Kissinger was criticized by the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky, who compared the position of the diplomat with the mood of European politicians in 1938.
