In Latvia, there is a collection of signatures for placing nuclear weapons in the country.
The collection of signatures for the call for NATO allies to place nuclear weapons on the territory of Latvia began on the portal of public initiatives Manabalss.lv.
The authors of the initiative emphasize that any NATO country can count on a “nuclear umbrella”. The initiative notes that, for example, the US nuclear weapon has long been located outside the territory of the state – in Belgium, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands.
“countries and military bases where nuclear weapons are located are more protected because the United States will not allow their nuclear arsenal to fall into the hands of the aggressor,”- follows from the text posted on the portal.
The authors of the idea note that Poland has long been negotiating that the United States has been placed nuclear weapons in the country.
The authors of the initiative urge the Sejm to start negotiations with NATO allies on the placement of nuclear weapons in Latvia, which would be a significant step in strengthening defense.
The text notes that “the Kremlin respects only the strength, quantity and quality of weapons”, and also contains a reminder that during the occupation of the USSR there were already nuclear military bases in Latvia, on which more than 100 missiles were located.
“Therefore, talking about the placement of nuclear weapons in Latvia would not be new. But then it was occupation forces. Now Latvia is an independent country, and he decides how to strengthen its security. Therefore, we ask the Sejm to start negotiations with the allies On NATO about the placement of nuclear weapons in Latvia and prepare the necessary legal framework for this, ”the authors of the initiative added.
At the moment, the petition was able to collect 93 out of 10 thousand necessary signatures.
