Currently in Latvia there are about 3,000 soldiers of the NATO union forces, but in the coming years their number will increase.
According to ERR, the Minister of Defense of Latvia Andris Spruds said about this to Latvian television.
“We are very actively moving forward in the issue of increasing the presence of allies,” the minister said.
Spruds said that an agreement was concluded with Canada, which ensures the presence of 2200 Canadian soldiers in Latvia in 2026.
Similarly, Sweden confirmed that next year she would send up to 800 soldiers to Latvia.
In order to be able to increase the presence of allied forces, the base of the National Armed Forces (NVS) in Adazhi, as well as the landfill in the Celia, expands, the minister said.
In the Marup Territory, a base is being built, where there will be 700 Canadian soldiers, the head of the department noted.
Spruds emphasized that the future military training ground in Celia is a very important object of strategic infrastructure, and the first stage of development of the landfill should end by the end of 2025 or the beginning of 2026.
This will be the largest landfill in the Baltic countries with an area of 25,000 hectares, the minister added.
