Latvian Parliament allowed volunteers to fight on side of Ukraine

The Sejm (Parliament) of Latvia at an extraordinary meeting on Monday urgently approved amendments to the Law on National Security, allowing residents of the Republic to fight on the side of Ukraine as volunteers. This is reported by the local LETA Agency.

Amendments to the law conceptually approved the Seimas Commission on Defense, internal affairs and the prevention of corruption on the evening of February 27. Those who will start service in Ukraine will have to register immediately in the accounting division of the reserve of the National Armed Forces, provide for amendments.

So far, the law banned the citizens of Latvia to serve in the Armed Forces, the inner army, military organization, the service of intelligence or security, police or judicial services of a foreign state or another subject of international law. Exceptions are made for service in EU structures, EU member states, NATO and some other international organizations.
