Lithuania sent an application to the European Investment Bank (EIB) with a request for financial support in the construction of the Bundeswehr’s military base in Rudninkai near the border with Belarus. This was reported by the Lithuanian National Radio and Television LRT with reference to the statement of President Eb Nadia Kalvino.
“The Lithuanian government sent us a request that we are now studying. They want to get financial assistance for the construction of a military base for the new Bundeswehr brigade in Rudninkai near the border with Belarus,” Calvino said.
It was previously reported that the Lithuanian Minister of Finance Rimantas Shajyus has already begun negotiations with EIB.
According to Shajus, Eib could partially finance projects on Lithuania defense and infrastructure security.
September 27, 2024, the Lithuanian Sejm approved the ratification of the agreement with Berlin on the placement of German military in the republic.
Germany plans to place a team of about 5 thousand military personnel in Lithuania by the end of 2027. 80 percent of the military will serve in Rudninkai of the Shalchininki district, and the rest – in the Rukle of the Yonava district.
