The main task for NATO is currently to help Ukraine win the war against Russia, said the Secretary General of the Alliance Jens Stoltenberg at a press conference following a two -day summit in Bucharest. His words are commented by BBC.
A joint statement of the heads of the Foreign Ministry of NATO member countries says that the Allies should mobilize all their forces in matters of military, economic, financial and humanitarian support of Ukraine. According to Stoltenberg, the membership of Ukraine in NATO is not a priority question, since in the event of a defeat in the war, he will not stand on the agenda at all.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has already responded to the final statement of NATO.
“The formulations contained in the document indicate that NATO is absolutely not interested in a political and diplomatic decision in Ukraine. NATO countries are trying to accuse the Russian side of criminal acts, atrocities committed by the Armed Forces of Ukraine with the total connivance of the Western sponsors of the Kyiv regime,” said the one Official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Maria Zakharova.
During the summit, the alliance also discussed further policy in relation to countries where Russian influence is maintained to one degree or another. It was mainly about Moldova, Georgia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“I think an important lesson that should be extracted from the situation with Ukraine is that we need to support these countries right now, and not when events begin to develop the other way,” said Jens Stoltenberg.
According to the head of the alliance, the war in Ukraine also showed the dangerous dependence of Europe on Russian gas. This should serve as an occasion to think about how much the West depends on other authoritarian regimes, and not least on China, as for the supply chains, technologies or infrastructure, Stoltenberg said.
