Mark Rutte remained only contender for post of Secretary General NATO

The Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte remained the only contender for the post of Secretary General of NATO.

The politician enlisted the support of the leaders of all NATO countries, including Romania. In addition to Rutte, the head of the North Atlantic Alliance was claimed by Romania President Klaus Johannis. On Thursday, June 20, he announced the withdrawal of his candidacy.

It is expected that Mark Rutte will replace the current Secretary General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg on October 1.

The official decision on the appointment of a new head of the block will be made at the NATO summit, which will be held in Washington from July 9 to 11.
