Moldova is the most vulnerable country in Europe to the consequences of climate change.
This is the President of Moldova, Maya Sandu, at the summit of the leaders of the 29th session of the conference of the parties to the UN Frame Convention on Climate Change (COP29). The text of the speech is given by Moldipres.
“For Moldova, climate change is not a distant threat, it is a current reality that affects our daily life, economics and especially rural communities that depend on agriculture,” said Sandu.
Improving temperature, long droughts, as well as unpredictable and abundant precipitation, reduce the yield of agricultural crops, such as wheat and corn, while the vineyards of Moldova, important for the Moldovan economy and heritage, are faced with new challenges, the president drew attention. < /p>
According to Sandu, access to water becomes more and more difficult, which affects both agriculture and everyday life.
Small and developing economies around the world share this burden, often without the necessary resources for recovery, the Moldovan leader drew attention.
“This emphasizes the acute and affordable system for financing the fight against climate change, which would give priority to vulnerable countries and increase their stability. It is quite fair to count on the support of developed countries,” the president said.
In order to accelerate the implementation of measures to combat climate change, existing funds and programs should also facilitate the bureaucratic processes that have been occupying years today, Maya Sandu said.
“In Moldova, we contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions. Despite the numerous crises caused by the brutal war of Russia against Ukraine, which causes damage to our economy, we launched the national forestry program – an attempt to increase the forest area by 5 percent, demonstrating our commitment a more green future, ”said the head of state.
Despite the limited resources, Moldova pursues this goal for the health of the planet and future generations, improve the quality of air, biodiversity and soils, the president noted.
Recent global energy crises forced Moldova to act quickly, consumption is reduced in the country due to energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources expands, the president said, noting that overword and decarbonization are expensive, and with more consistent support, Chisinau could accelerate these existential efforts .
“Time is expired – global warming will not wait until we solve other crises. History will condemn us if we do not take any action, risking to make large territories of the planet unsuitable for life. Our solidarity will determine the future of the Earth today,” Maya adds today Sandu.
