Maya Sandu: Moldova will not leave CIS

President of Moldova Maya Sandu said that the issue of Moldova’s exit from the CIS is currently not discussed.

“The CIS is not only Russia, but also other countries. Kishinev receives trade and economic benefits not only in relations with Russia, but also in cooperation with other countries,” Sandu explained in an interview with the local television channel PROTV-Chisinau.

At the same time, Sandu urged not to link the republic’s stay in the Commonwealth with the process of its European integration. “Now we’ll talk about the exit from the Commonwealth. We’ll get it to that and we will discuss it,” the president said, calling on to move sequentially.

She expressed hope that already in June, Chisinau would receive the status of an EU candidate. “We must understand that European integration will not come tomorrow, even if we get the status of a candidate country in the EU. The situation is changing rapidly now, a lot will depend on the geopolitical situation,” Sandu concluded.

In March, Moldova sent an application for joining the European Union. Sandu signed the corresponding document with the chairman of the parliament Igor Gros and Prime Minister Natalya Gavrilitsa.
