Moldova: Day Of Silence Came On Eve Of Second Round Of Presidential Election

In Moldova, on the eve of the second round of the presidential election, which will be held on Sunday, November 3, a day of silence was announced.

According to the Code of Election, today and tomorrow, election campaigning is strictly prohibited, Moldovan State Media reports.

The Central Election Commission (CEC) warns that on these two days it is impossible to carry out and transmit measures and materials of the election nature.

The Chairman of the CEC Angelica Karaman clarified that the election campaign is strictly prohibited on elections day and on the day preceding them

“Local authorities and advertising broadcasters are required to delete election advertising materials. The ban does not apply to information already posted on the Internet. Also during this period, candidates in the elections and referendum participants are prohibited from performing in television and radio broadcasts,” Karaman said.

In addition, the election participants cannot transfer money to/from the account designated as the “Electoral Fund”.

According to the Code of Offenses, the continuation of election campaigning on the indicated days by the media, election participants and citizens is an administrative offense and is punishable by a fine of 2,000 to 3,000 lei for individuals and from 5,000 to 7,500 lei for legal persons.

Moldovan citizens are waiting at polling stations on Sunday, from 7.00 to 21.00. In the second round of elections for the highest state post, the candidate from the PAS Action and Solidarity party, the current head of state Maya Sandu and a candidate from the Socialist Party Alexander Stoyanoglo.

For voting around the country, 2,819,99 ballots were prepared, another 839.2 thousand are intended for plots abroad.

In total, more than 2200 polling stations were formed, including 30 for residents of the Transnistrian region, more than 300 in Chisinau and its suburbs, 234 – abroad.
