Moldova: II summit of European political community starts

In Moldova on June 1, the second summit of the European political community will start.

The summit, which will be held in the historical Mimi Castle 40 km from Chisinau, will be attended by leaders of 47 European countries, including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, as well as heads of the European Union institutions (EU).

Russia and Belarus did not receive invitations to the summit.

The first summit of the European political community was held on October 6, 2022 in and Prague on the initiative of France President Emmanuel Macron.

According to European officials, the conduct of the summit in Moldova has symbolic significance against the background of the war in Ukraine.

EU officials have repeatedly argued that after Ukraine, Russia initiates a war against Moldova.

In this regard, the holding of a large -scale event in Moldova is a kind of message to Moscow.

Moldova announced her independence in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union. However, in the subsequent period, pro -Russian separatists in the Transnistria region in the east of the country, with the support of Russia, unilaterally announced their independence.

After the statements that Ukraine is holding its ammunition in the border zone, in February the Russian Federation warned the USA, NATO and Ukraine against “adventurous” steps regarding Transnistria.

In February, the Prime Minister of Moldova Dorin Rechan announced the need to demilitarize the Transnistrian region.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, in turn, said: “Russia and Moldova have a very tense relationship and Chisinau rolled up to anti-Russian hysteria.”

Russia posted in Transnistria the military, which it calls the “peacekeepers”, and annually spends millions of dollars on supporting separatists in the region.

In addition, in the village of Kobasna in Transnistria is the largest arsenal of Russia from the Second World War.

EU provided Ukraine and Moldova with the status of a candidate for the European Union on June 23, 2022. The decision was made after the start of the war between the Russian Federation and Ukraine in February 2022.

, within the framework of the Summit of the European Political Community, 4 round tables will be held, as well as many bilateral and multilateral meetings. A meeting of the leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia, France and Germany is expected.

The meeting will become the next stage in negotiations between the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia Ilham Aliyev and Nikol Pashinyan, after negotiations in Brussels with the participation of the EU head Charles Michel. This time the meeting will be held with the participation of France President Emannuel Macron and Chancellor of Germany Olaf Sholts.

The third summit of the European political community is scheduled for October 2023 and will be held in Spain.
