International Migration Organization (MOM) and 45 MOM partners for humanitarian activities and development requested $ 81 million for the provision of vital assistance to more than a million migrants, as well as the communities who accept them in Gibuti, Ethiopia, Somalia, the Republic of Tanzania, the Republic of Tanzania, Kenya and Yemen.
According to the UN press service, hundreds of thousands of migrants annually go on dangerous travels, mainly from Ethiopia and Somalia, so that through Djibuti and Yemen to get into the countries of the Persian Gulf.
Migrants follow the alternative route through Kenya and Tanzania in the hope of getting to South Africa.
These life-threatening travels, the MOM statement says mainly migrants who are desperately looking for work due to difficult economic conditions and poverty, and in some cases due to violence and political instability in their homeland. In addition, climatic shocks and natural disasters are becoming more and more often the driving force of migration.
“Every day countless women, men and children are faced with mortal danger on the eastern and southern migration routes in Africa, – said Amy POUP, general director of MOM.
According to her, without immediate support of migrants and communities who accept them, suffering will be aggravated, tension – grow, and vital help – remain inaccessible.
Last year, on the route leading to the Persian Gulf region, MOM tracked 446 thousand movements, 10 percent of which were for children. On this route, migrants are often hungry and dehydration.
According to the MOM project “Missing Migrants”, in 2024 at least 559 people were killed on the eastern and southern routes, and there is no information about many other cases of death.
women and girls who make up almost a third of all moving faces are often subjected to sexual and gender violence. Migrants also often encounter operation and cruel circulation, risk becoming victims of people’s merchants and being detained without a proper legal basis.
According to the MOM, this year, 1.4 million migrants and the communities that accept them on these routes will be required. They need food, clothing, medical care, water, sanitary and hygiene items, psychosocial support, as well as, if necessary, help in voluntary return and reintegration.
The activities of the MOM to assist migrants remains chronically underfunded. In 2024, a call was announced on the allocation of $ 112 million, but so far only 20 percent of this amount was collected.
