Mongolian Foreign Minister: Our Country Is Very Suffering From Climate And Desertification Change

Mongolia made a very active initiative to combat deserting and in 2026 will accept the 17th session of the conference of the part of the UN Convention on Combating desertification.

About this, the Foreign Minister of Mongolia Batmunhiin Batzeces told Montsame during the participation in the 29th session of the conference of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku.

The head of the diplomatic mission recalled that the corresponding statement during the speech at the conference was made by the President of Mongolia Ukhnaiin Huralsukh.

“Yes, indeed, the president noted that Mongolia came up with a very active initiative to combat desertification and in 2026 will accept the 17th session of the conference of the UN Convention to Combat desertification,” said the minister.

Mongolia invites countries suffering from desertification, as well as international scientists in this field to conduct research, submit scientific reports and organize conferences, Batzeces noted, adding that preparation for this important event is conducted at a high level in cooperation with the UN.

The head of the department recalled that Mongolia, where pasture livestock is developed, is very suffering from climate and desertification change.

“for developing countries like ours, this is a serious problem, since the budget to combat climate change is very limited, which entails significant economic losses,” the minister explained.

In this regard, the president noted that developed countries should increase their financial investments in solving these problems, which, in turn, will correspond to the total interests of more than 100 countries that have suffered greatly from climate change and are engaged in pasture livestock, recalled. Foreign Minister of Mongolia.

The minister was asked to comment on the president’s statement that Mongolia spends only 1 percent of his GDP to combat climate change, and this figure must be increased to 50 percent.

“Of course, an increase in these expenses is extremely necessary. One of the main problems that many countries are faced with is to distribute limited financial resources and determine priorities in the budget. Therefore, for an effective struggle with a change in climate and active assistance to solving global problems, it is necessary to accept Political decisions aimed at allocating additional funds, ”said Batzesz.

Thus, for the organization of the 17th conference of the parties (COP17), to combat desertification in 2026, Mongolia will have significant expenses, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Changes allocated a certain budget, the diplomat explained.

“We plan to distribute these funds for several years, directing them to cover the organizational expenses of all relevant institutions. This will be considered as the contribution of Mongolia to the global struggle with a change in the climate,” the minister added.
