In Yerevan a few days ago, a group of radically customized persons ocked a monument to Mahatma Gandhi, throwing it with eggs. And on the eve at night there was arson. Previously, calls for his destruction were heard.
Yerevan authorities condemned the desecration of the monument to Mahatma Gandhi, the press secretary of the mayor of the Armenian capital Akop Karapetyan said. According to him, the attackers committed a blatant act of vandalism, law enforcement officers are obliged to find the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
“The situation is extremely unpleasant for us, does not honor us. Unfortunately, this is not the first similar case in Yerevan. It is necessary to give a strict evaluation,” – quotes Sputnik Armenia official.
The decision to establish a Gandhi Monument in Yerevan as a symbol of good relationship between Armenia and India was taken last year and was criticized by part of the public. Rosbalt writes that the opponents of this decision were talked about the allegedly existing policies with the leadership of Turkey and the negotiation of the “Armenian Genocide” in the Ottoman Empire. In the city hall of Yerevan, these statements were called “speculation.” It is possible that the record of the Indian embassy was pushed to this action on his page on Twitter, where it first said that on April 24, the 106th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide was celebrated, but then the word “genocide” was replaced by the “Day of Maching Day”.
